Roofing in Currans Hill, Camden Council Area

Currans Hill sits on the rise between Narellan and Mount Annan, on the Camden Council side of the district. The name is older than the suburb — there was a Currans Hill station on the Camden branch railway line until it closed in 1963, long before the houses arrived.

The housing here is mostly 1990s, which puts these roofs at an interesting age.

Roofs in their thirties

A 1990s concrete tile roof is in better shape than a 1970s one, but it is no longer new, and the things that go first are the same things in the same order:

• Ridge and hip pointing. Even where flexible compounds were coming into use, plenty of roofs from this era were still pointed in rigid cement, and inland heat cycling has had thirty years at it.
• Bedding mortar softening under the caps.
• Valley irons starting to show corrosion at the trough base where debris sits.
• Surface wear on the exposed planes, visible as fading and the first moss on the shaded side.

Caught now, this is a straightforward roof restoration on a roof with plenty of structure left. Left another decade, more of it becomes replacement work.

Sloping blocks

Currans Hill is built across a slope, and that has two effects on roofing. Runoff arrives at the gutters fast, so a gutter that has lost its fall or a valley holding a dam of leaves is found out immediately. And split-level and two-storey homes are common, which changes access and edge protection on a quote.
